Makerere Webmail Issues

You are here

It has come to our attention that many of you can't perform the following using our mailing platform (webmail)

Response to emails received from hotmail accounts.

  • The cause for this is technical and will be resolved soon. However,if you have your Makerere webmail being forwarded to another email account such as Gmail, you can respond to emails from hotmail using the Gmail account and it will still appear as though you are emailing from your official Makerere email address. To do this, follow the steps below:
  • To forward your webmail to your Gmail or other account click on "Options"within webmail, then click "forwarding" and then enter your Gmail or other account in the text box and click Ok.
  • Once this is completed, all your webmail will be forwarded automatically to your Gmail or other account. You can then respond to emails from Hotmail using your Gmail account. For your responses to appear as though you are sending from your official Makerere email, the following have to be done within Gmail.
  • Click on the settings button (top right corner button within Gmail that looks like a wheel)  . Then click on "settings" and then click on "Accounts" and look for "send mail as" and then click on "Add another email address you own", a new screen will come up allowing you to enter an email address. At this point enter your official Makerere email address, then click next and click "send verification".An email with a verification code will be sent to your official Makerere email address.Select the code and paste it into the verification box and then verify. At this point, your Makerere email will be added to the list of email addressess you can use to send from your Gmail.
  • However, for you to use the official Makerere email when responding from Gmail, you will need to select the Makerere email from the list of emails.
  • Gmail offers an easier option to have the above done and that is why we have chosen to use it for illustration.Other platforms such as yahoo and hotmail can also allow you to send as though you are sending from your official Mak email. However the process is longer and not user-friendly.Google offers a simpler and robust option.

Inability to send emails using mail clients such as Outlook or Thunderbird when not connected to the Makerere University network/Internet.

  • The reason for the above is because when you are off campus,or even on campus but connected to another network (orange,UTL,MTN),you will need to reconfigure the Incoming to that of Makerere (mail.mak.ac.ug) and outgoing (POP and SMTP) server settings on your mail client to those of the network you sending from. When this is correctly done, you should be able to send and receive emails.
  • However, when you reconnect to the University network/internet,you will again need to reconfigure back to our settings. This is abit tidious and we suggest that when you are off campus or using a different network,Simply log directly into webmail (https://webmail.mak.ac.ug/src/login.php) and you will easily send/receive emails.
  • We have plans to have this resolved in the near future.Hope the information given above is clear. Please don't hesitate to get in touch for guidance.
