Windows 10: Should You Upgrade?

You are here

Dear Staff,

Microsoft officially released Windows 10 on the 29th/07/2015.The Corporation (Microsoft) has been running a three year release cycle for every new version of Windows (Vista,7,8,8.1 etc) and each upgrade was aimed at fixing loopholes in the previous release, however this has not always been the case with some newer versions performing worse than the older ones.

Microsoft is offering free upgrade to Windows 10 for a period of one year for users of Windows 7 and 8,while those running XP and Vista will have to pay for the upgrade. While Windows 10 offers a better user interface than Windows 8,it's not advisable to immediately upgrade to a new release without observing the challenges it causes (after-all we have till July
2016 for the free upgrade offer to expire). Therefore if you must upgrade,it's advisable that you do it after six to eight months of the operating system release.Microsoft will also continue to support Windows 7 and Windows 8 until the 14th/01/2020 and 10th/01/2023 respectively (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle).

Windows 10 is very much a cloud-centric system (has many features that require near constant internet connection to perform optimally). This cloud-centricity,may pose a challenge in a bandwidth constrained environment like Makerere were your Windows 10 may slow down over time due to lack of constant updates.Windows 10 is also seen as the onset of a new trend of Microsoft operating systems known as "Windows-As-A-Service"
(WaaS) which will be cloud-centric in nature thus requiring near constant internet connectivity for optimal performance.

We therefore need to gear-up for this trend by gradually increasing and effectively managing our bandwidth over time to be able to effectively work with the future versions of Operating systems.

DICTS will continue updating you on these and other ICT related trends in industry as well as offer you ICT related support.
