Microsoft pauses Windows 10 Latest Update after users loosing files

On 6th October Microsoft rolled back the distribution of its latest Windows 10 October update. This was due to data loss complaints raised by its users who ran the update.

According to the verge, the software giant started rolling out the update during the company’s Surface event earlier this week, but some Windows 10 users immediately noticed their documents were being deleted. “We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,” says Microsoft on its support site for Windows Update.

Given the serious nature of any data loss, we took the added precaution of pulling all 1809 media across all channels, including Windows Server 2019 and IoT equivalents.  We intentionally start each feature update rollout slowly, closely monitoring feedback before offering the update more broadly. Said John Cable – Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery

In this case the update was only available to those who manually clicked on “check for updates” in Windows settings.  At just two days into the rollout when we paused, the number of customers taking the October 2018 Update was limited.  While the reports of actual data loss are few (one one-hundredth of one percent of version 1809 installs), any data loss is serious. More reporting from Verge cited that, Microsoft is now recommending that affected users contact the company directly, and if you’ve manually downloaded the October update then “please don’t install it and wait until new media is available.” Other Windows 10 users have been complaining that the Microsoft Edge browser and other store apps have been unable to connect to the internet after the October 2018 Update, and the update was even blocked on certain PCs due to Intel driver incompatibilities.

WINDOWS 10 IS TESTED BY MILLIONS OF PEOPLE

It’s not clear how many Windows 10 users are affected by the problem, but even if it’s a small percentage it’s still surprising this issue was never picked up during Microsoft’s vast testing of the October update. Millions of people help Microsoft test Windows 10, but the company has struggled with the quality of Windows updates recently. Microsoft delayed its Windows 10 April 2018 Update earlier this year over Blue Screen of Death issues, but those problems were picked up before the update reached regular consumers and businesses.

Microsoft was planning to push the latest October update out to all Windows 10 users next Tuesday, but that’s now likely to be put on hold while investigations continue into this major deletion problem.

Reporting from BBC – Technology cited;

“Last night I updated to 1809, and it all went smoothly, but then I find that all my files in Documents are deleted. Gone. Poof. This included many crucial documents and financial info,” wrote Stuart Dole on a forum on the Microsoft website.

At time of writing there were 470 people who had the same question, with some reporting other issues as well.

Analyst Nick McQuire, from CCS Insight, told the BBC this could affect people’s trust in Microsoft.

“Microsoft wants to encourage people to update quite often,” he said.

“They have the facility to push down updates quickly, but this goes to show there is going to be continued resistance from users to download the latest and greatest update if they can’t ensure their quality control.

“They need to build trust with the community.”

Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider Programme, tweeted that support staff “have the tools to get you back to a good state”.
