Checking your Website Performance Using Google Apps

Here's how you can find out the performance of your website i.e. Page Increaments or drops, 404 errors, malware infections, Google bots Issues etc..

You will need to the following: -

  • Google Account
  • Functional Website
  • FTP and or Back-end access to your Website

Get Started:

  • Log into your Google Webmaster tools account and add your website (Click Add A Site). If you have a Google Analytics accounts already and your website is set up already, this process will be only a step or two less. Adding your website successfully involves entering a URL of the website, uploading a given file to your root web directory and verifying access to that file. You basically have to do this for every website.
  • After successfull verification, monitoring would be initiated automatically. However, you can go ahead and upload a sitemap of your website to your website's dashboard. Click here for more information about Sitemaps
  • You're now able to monitor performance of your website.
    You will recieve Alerts/Warnings of errors faced on your website ranging from: -
    • Inaccessibility by Google bots
    • Inaccessibility via a sitemap
    • 404 Errors
    • Malware
  • Use the statistics available at Google Webmaster tools to find out how your website is progressing. Contact the Webmaster in case of any issues ranging from understanding how this tool will help you, setting it up for your website or an issue regarding the results from the analysis of your website.

This tool is very essential in monitoring PAGE LOSS, FILE LOSS, ACCESSIBILITY, PERFORMANCE of your website AND SHOULD THEREFORE BE USED

Errors you may come accross and how to fix them..

  • If you recieve an error like the one above, click "View Details" to find out whats goin on
  • Read through and implement the google articles on the "Recommended Action" on the page that follows. These will make you check to see if your website is accessible. After you think you've fixed the problem, use "Fetch as Google" to verify that Googlebot can properly access your site. If you're successful with this process as well then your website is OK.
  • You can also go through Crawl Errors/Stats and more options available in your website's dashboard.
